Summary:
Dr Robert Smith, ageing libertine, part-time spiritualist, and senior partner at Llangandida Health Centre, is on the verge of first-time fatherhood when his partner Sandy miscarries. A fertility test confirms all’s well, but he also tests positive for prostate cancer.
The prospect of prostate cancer, and the possible side effects of treatment (impotence, incontinence) sends Robert into spirals of panic at the impending threat to his masculinity. He must find the right course of treatment, hold on to his relationship with Sandy, keep an eye on his partners and the practice budget, and rediscover a sense of self-worth, all the while continuing to treat his patients.
This funny, topical follow-up to The Bad Doctor and The Lady Doctor is the final book in Ian Williams’s highly popular trilogy about life in a general practice.
The Bad Doctor was shortlisted for the First Graphic Novel Competition in 2012, and published by Myriad in 2014. The Bad Doctor series has now been optioned for TV by Baby Cow Productions.
IAN WILLIAMS is a comics artist, doctor and writer from Wales, now living in Brighton. He founded the website GraphicMedicine.org, coining the term that has been applied to the interaction between the medium of comics and the discourse of healthcare.
