Summary:
Sumatra – A Year on a Tropical Island is an autobiographical travelogue in the form of a novel. It tells about the author’s year, which she spent in Sumatra after receiving a scholarship, studying traditional arts and culture. Before leaving, she expected vivid tropical scenery, tempting smells and tastes, stunning volcanoes and exciting life by the ocean. Due to significant cultural and religious differences, her academic year soon after her arrival became a great personal challenge, which also called into question her other beliefs about religion, the world and people.
In her debut, Katarina Šeme consciously does not embellish things. Narrative black and white drawings reflect her personal perspective as she outlines a year on a tropical island, woven from contacts with locals, excursions around the island and experiences along the way, as well as personal feelings and impressions of this very different life. With Sumatra, she presents herself to Slovenian readers as a master of the genre, who boldly masters the narrative of images.
