Summary:
In 1986, all the teenaged Ella cared about was how to get her backcombed goth hairstyle to stay in place; how to afford those cool skull earrings; which music was cool and which, like Duran Duran, was the height of naffness… oh, and boys. Definitely boys.
When Ella starts dating an art student more than ten years her senior, and he’s in a band, she thinks she’s about as cool as it gets. But, as his mental health problems become increasingly apparent, it’s very clear that she doesn’t have the required skills to cope.
Years later, we follow the adult Ella as she retraces her steps and the memories of the Eighties come thick and fast, forcing a reckoning that she’s been trying to avoid for decades.
Satin and Tat‘s 80s setting gives a wonderful opportunity for deep dives into the hair, makeup, music and subcultures of the era. It is a fond homage to the time, based on the author’s own firsthand experiences.
The title is taken from a lyric by David Bowie, who is a recurring theme throughout the story.
