  • Summary:

A graphic memoir about a century of migration.

Through vivid illustrations and an intimate narrative, it weaves together past and present to reveal how the journeys of our ancestors continue to shape who we are today.

It begins with my great-uncle, Gracco Cornelio Rondalli – a wealthy heir torn between his socialist ideals and the looming First World War. Defying his family, he falls in love with a woman from a lower class and follows her to Argentina. But the promise of a new life is shattered by tragedy and cultural exile. Gracco remains a man caught between worlds – never quite Argentinian, no longer fully Italian.

Roots explores how global forces – war, class struggle, migration – leave deep imprints on personal lives. As I retrace Gracco’s journey, I uncover not only his forgotten story but also my own place within it. This is a tale of love, loss, resilience – and the quiet, transformative act of reclaiming where you come from.

Roots was published by BeccoGiallo Editore in Italy in 2023. It was included among the best 12 graphic novels published in Italy by L’Indiscreto and was the centre of three museum exhibitions in Italy (Pisa, Cernobbio and Lecco).
