  • Summary:

Polly is born in a body that, according to established medical and social norms, cannot be placed in the strictly separate categories of male and female. He is an intersex person who is recognized as such only in his teenage years, after being classified as a “boy” for his entry into society. Because the world we live in separates, defines, determines, ranks, organizes, sorts.
As Polly grows up, a doubt grows in him/her: he feels that he/she is not a boy, but not a girl either…His/her inner search grows into a rebellion against society and its obsession with conformity, with what is “according to the majority”.
This struggle, this search for one’s own space without sacrificing one’s own being, is also reflected in language – where else! How to think, how to express this non-categorization, so that the already established rails do not grind it with their automatism?
Polly is a very special riso novel with a theme that is rarely encountered in youth and other literature. It boasts the Rodolphe-Töpfer (2021), Pépites (youth literature book fair in Montreuil, France, 2021) and Bologna Ragazzi (young adult category, 2022) awards.
