Summary:
Micky Dirkzwager (born in Haarlem, 1998) made this book as a graduation assignment at the HKU in Utrecht and presented it to Scratch during a Strippitch in Brussels. We fell out of our chairs laughing while reading her book and that doesn’t happen often! This way you can still end up where you belong via a detour through Belgium.
In Blinking & Breathing we follow Micky criss-cross through her education, where, on the verge of a nervous breakdown, she discovers that it is not a burnout she is suffering from, but an eating disorder (“You get that for free”). She draws the world and herself with a good dose of humor. Spontaneity and movement are very important in her drawings. Otherwise they will kill you, just like beer. How do you deal with the bears that you see on the road, but who also comfort you when you are no longer feeling well? But perhaps more importantly: how do you get rid of those bears?
It is impressive how Micky has already mastered so many different styles and can bring them together in a single story. In addition, she has a completely unique, original voice. A beautiful orchestration of beautiful images with strong texts and sharp dialogues: that is a good visual story. And then there is a lot to laugh about too.
