Summary:
The story of Hellé Nice, a pioneering female race car driver of the interwar period, who rose to fame in the 1920s with her daring performances and record-breaking achievements on her Bugatti Type 35C.
Hellé Nice was a female race car driver from the interwar period. She died in poverty and general indifference in Nice in 1984, a stark contrast to the flamboyance of her sporting achievements and daring performances during the Roaring Twenties. On June 1929, Hellé Nice won her first women’s Grand Prix at the Autodrome of Linas-Montlhéry. On December of the same year, driving a Bugatti Type 35C, she reached an average speed of 194 km/h over 10 laps on the same circuit. Her accolades include setting a new official women’s speed record the following year. Competing in North American and Brazilian Grand Prix races against men didn’t intimidate her, even when facing the top drivers of the time. After World War II, she was unjustly accused of collaboration, causing her sponsors and friends to abandon her. This biopic aims to restore her memory and revisit the remarkable artistic and technical creativity of the era, highlighting Paris during the Roaring Twenties and the iconic Bugatti cars. Giuseppe Manunta’s artistic talent shines through in this work, where blue and sepia tones mix together. Female bodies are revealed, and the race cars of the 1930s display their power, agility, and danger, thrilling spectators. Dandies and art enthusiasts also compete in imaginative displays within grand settings.
