“My dad, if he introduced himself to you, would have called himself an artist…”

Throughout his life, Maria Stoian’s father painted. Mostly, he painted copies of famous masterpieces and through them, introduced Maria to art. His largest work, a copy of John Constable’s Salisbury Cathedral, is still incomplete. Before he died, he asked Maria to finish it.

Forgeries is Maria Stoian’s graphic memoir exploring her relationship with her father, his illness and his death; the process of her own coming out, her grief and the way art tied them together.

Forgeries explores the complexities of family relationships and the strange journey of growing up.
