Summary:
‘Their brother. Born shortly after the war, an accident, just after the camp… He was hidden under her hunger edema. Smuggling child, during the crossing. At home they call him boy, lad, or after the last job he performed: scrubber, sweeper, dustpan or stoker. And sometimes, when the girls are generous, they sweetly call him brother.”
For Familieziek, Peter van Dongen, together with Adriaan van Dis, adapted his novel into a graphic story. A novel in scenes about an Indian family, scarred by the war, that tries to find its roots in Holland in the 1950s. The sisters whisper secrets behind the curtain. The father, eager for justice to be restored, prepares his son for a new danger: the Russians! In the midst of all this, the boy finds comfort in his shadow brother, whose presence he feels but who is never allowed to be spoken of.
