Summary:
Tegan Phillips’ illustrated memoir of ‘making friends with my Brain on a family bike trip through Africa’
This is the story of the year Tegan Phillips and her family left their suburban home in Cape Town (South Africa) and cycled 11,000km through Africa, accompanied by their pet pot plant, Speckles, and the spirit of Eckhart Tolle. And of how, during that year, she learned how to take her Brain less seriously.
It’s about the big things that happened: like the elephant chase and the train that fell over and the drug-fuelled machete attack … but it’s also about the meaning they made from those things: how they discovered diversity and complexity in places that stereotypes had led them to believe we’d find a homogenous mess of poverty and chaos, and how they found familiarity in the places that stereotypes had prepared them to find fundamental difference. Realising that Grand Adventure is mostly the same as regular life but with more scorpions, less wifi and the same amount of dysfunctional mental activity.
Tegan Phillips is a cartoonist, speaker and endurance cyclist, living in Girona, Spain.
