Summary:
Spring is coming and Polza Mancini, the protagonist of the Blast tetralogy, is on the road again. He tries to remain as invisible as possible, constantly moves and wipes his tracks behind him, seeks shelter and solace again in nature. While spending the night in one of the houses he breaks into, he comes across a collection of pictures of a local road worker who committed suicide, and apparently also painted. The two detectives interrogating him tell the story of the mass of identical pictures: “Portraits themselves. Dozens of sleepers, sick and beautiful,” he says. “I felt right at home among them. If suffering has a face, then the road worker captured its image in his paintings.” Only one picture, Polza continues, was different. A small landscape in which he recognized “that diffused, soft light which for several weeks foreshadows the brilliance with which real summer begins… and that peace at the end of the afternoon… and that new sun that lengthens the shadows and with them under the evening sweeps through the meadows. I learned all this a year ago!” So far we are on page 34. Out of 208 pages.
In a brilliant translation by Katja Šaponjić, Part 3 of Larcenet’s tetralogy reveals the continuation of Polza’s complex life story, this almost perfect metaphor for the world we live in. With the 3rd part, Blast proves itself once again to be a painfully topical work, which is also a textbook example of a risoro novel, a masterpiece not only of comic books, but of art in general.
