  • Summary:

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s (1960-1988) provocative work reflects punk, jazz, graffiti, hip hop and other cultural elements of New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At the age of 15, Basquiat fled Brooklyn to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where he soon established himself in an avant-garde art and culture scene that also included Keith Haring and Madonna.

Over thirty years after his early death, his work still influences contemporary art, fashion, design and music. Now Basquiat’s remarkable life story can also be found in a graphic novel. From the early SAMO graffiti to projects with Andy Warhol – author Julian Voloj and illustrator Søren Mosdal do not retell Basquiat’s life, but rather show a young artist who struggles with fame, creativity and drug addiction and ultimately loses this battle.

The English edition of »Basquiat« was named one of the best comics of the year as well as one of the 100 best comics of the last decade by the renowned »The Comics Beat« in 2019.
